Back in May, I had the honor as well as luck of competing with 150 home brewing enthusiasts in Boulevard Brewing Company’s wort transformation contest. This experience gave me the opportunity to meet many of my fellow Kansas City-area home brewers, as well as the chance to gauge my knowledge on brewing. For about two months I tended to my brew more than any other beer I have made; I took notes almost daily on my beer, checking color and clarity and sampling for taste. I returned my beer to Boulevard and anxiously waited another month to see how my beer stood up to the other 150 brewers in the competition.
The judging was broken down into 5 categories: Aroma, Appearance, Flavor, Mouth-Feel, and Overall Impression, all rated on a scale from 0 to 50 points. In the end, my “blonde whit” beer accumulated a total of 37 points, which fell into the “Very Good” category. Under that point tier (which ended at 37 points) beer was noted as generally well executed with minor flaws.
The competition allowed me to meet many local home brewers as well as some more experienced brewers who are very close to joining the craft beer industry. It was an experience I will never forget, and I look forward to competing again next year!
